The Residence Permit Procedure

Signing the contract

You sign the agreement for legal support of the entire residence-permit process. Specialists advise on choosing the optimal program, help assemble the document package and support you at every stage.

01
Document preparation

Collection and preparation of all required documents in your country of residence: income certificates or savings statements, translations, apostille (if required). Specialists check that the package is complete.

02
Consular appointment

Online booking of an appointment at the Mexican consulate in your country of residence through the official portal. The wait can range from a few weeks to 2 to 3 months depending on the workload.

03
Document submission

In-person submission at the consulate on the appointed date. The consul checks the documents, asks about the purpose of the move, and decides on approval or refusal.

04
Approval

On a positive decision, a temporary visa confirmation is affixed in the passport, an entry permit to Mexico for completing the residence permit. In rare cases the visa may be issued right after submission.

05
Arrival in Mexico

The applicant must arrive in Mexico no later than 5 months after the visa is approved. On crossing the border, an entry mark is placed on the migration card.

06
Migration office appointment

The receiving party books the applicant an appointment at the local migration office (INM) and prepares the full document package: the residence-permit application, proof of address, a justification letter, the migration form and copies of documents.

07
Receiving the card

Within a month of arrival, the resident card (tarjeta de residente temporal) is issued, the plastic ID card confirming legal resident status in Mexico.

Important Details of the Procedur

  • Document apostille: If you submit documents to the Mexican embassy in your country, an apostille is usually not required. However, if documents are issued in one country while submission takes place at the consulate of another (for example, a certificate from a Turkish employer submitted at the Moscow consulate), an apostille and a notarized translation are required.
  • Residence-permit renewal: Renewal is done a month before the current visa term ends. In most cases the residence permit is renewed for 3 years, though sometimes for 2 or 1 year depending on the migration service’s assessment.
  • Dependent applicants: Once the main applicant obtains a Mexican residence permit, dependent family members can be added: spouse, minor children and parents. The procedure is the same: either through the consulate in the country of residence, or while already in Mexico through the local migration office.
